Writing, in the creative sense, is simply another form of arting. It is playing with words -- a visual material -- with a deliberate sort of attention until their massing begins to take a shape that interests one. The shape then suggests further play and manipulation of letters and words. This process continues until, at some mysterious but satisfying moment, the piece is built up. Then the editing starts (which too is a sort of play). Editing is a type of sculpting. Extraneous words are chiselled away, paragraphs are refined, sentences are honed and polished. The final piece of writing, then, is really a piece of sculpture, a sort of statue.
